Lion Rancher Conflict

A lion (Panthera leo) kills a cow at Jacks Camp, Botswana. A few hours earlier a lioness disabled this cow preventing it from getting up. The lioness waited in the nearby brush until dark. Our guide indicated she waited because lions recognize an added danger when they kill cattle. Ranches are known to shoot and poison lions to prevent attacks and the lions are wary. At dusk rather than killing the cow she jumped on its back causing it to scream. This attracted her mate who came running and made the kill. The Botswana government reimburses ranchers for lion killed cows however the reimbursement does not equate the market value so conflict is a continuing issue.
